I am calling for First Bus to review their proposed fares increases, or risk alienating people from using public transport.
First West Yorkshire announced on Monday that they would be introducing fare changes from 1st April to most ticket types, citing an investment in new buses, plus increased operating costs as reasons for the increases.
To introduce a 2.9% price increase in the current economic climate of frozen salaries and benefit cuts is unreasonable to say the least, and damaging to job prospects.
Many of the poorest in our society are reliant on public transport to get to work, and these increases will only make it harder for people to take up the lower paid jobs.
It is all well and good First Bus investing in new buses but if passengers are put off in their droves by unaffordable fares, the new buses will not be used.
