WEST YORKSHIRE FIRE & RESCUE SERVICE 6-MONTHLY REPORT

At the recent Outer North West Area Committee we were presented with the 6-monthly report for the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service. We are part of the Leeds West area for their purposes. The aim of the Fire Service is to make the area safer and prevention is a big part of the work. They carry out a number of Home Fire Safety Checks which attract points for the crews and this determines how effective they are. The data below gives the current picture plus a comparison with earlier years.

False Alarms* includes genuine calls of concern from the public and malicious calls plus automatic fire alarms.

Other** – incidents not falling into other sections including secondary fires, fires on industrial premises, rescues, people locked out etc.

They have been extremely successful in recent years in reducing the number of incidents through preventative work including talks to schools, visits to Older People’s Groups e.g. OPAL, partnering with local Rotarians and carrying out Home Fire Safety Checks. Stanningley Fire Station has been modified to include a Young Firefighters training area. They are also working with older school pupils about to start driving as within this age group road traffic accidents are the most common cause of death.

The merger of stations is in the early planning stages and Moortown and Cookridge Fire Stations will merge and move to a new site when a suitable piece of land somewhere in the Weetwood/Lawnswood roundabout area is found.
