I refer to the above and would advise that I have been working with Highways officers to try and find a solution to the traffic issues at this junction, most notably a right turn filter down to Pool from the A660. I have received the following information from the Urban Traffic & Control Manager:
“I know you have been concerned for some time about the delays to right turning traffic from Leeds – we have had various meetings on site, etc.
I am pleased to be able to tell you that we have at last found a way of relieving this queue without compromising the safety improvements that were implemented a few years ago.
The plan is to run the separately signalled right turn from the airport in every other cycle (unfortunately increasing their delay slightly). The time gained from this will allow us to give the Leeds to Pool right turn an indicative arrow. This may need to be given every other cycle as well, depending on traffic. Of course, on cycles where the arrow is not lit, people can still turn right as they do now. I would expect an arrow on alternate stages to remove the existing queue. It is possible that we may be able to provide a short right turn arrow stage every cycle, but we can only really know when we see how the new arrangement works in practice.
In order to implement this we need to change a few details in the design – the stage order, move the airport approach stop line, possibly re-cut the detection loops, as well as erecting the new arrow signal.
We are able to do this work out of our current refurbishment budget, but it will need programming in with other on-going schemes so it may be 3 months before we can get it done.
I am sure the improvement will be significant and welcome!”
I trust this keeps you up to date with this matter and I would like to thank you for helping me to lobby for this change on your behalf.
