At a meeting of the Outer North West Area Committee on 26th March OPAL (Older People’s Action in the Locality) based at HoltPark received funding of £1920 to pilot a table tennis activity group for its members. This will pay for hire of the facilities and transport to and from the facilities. It will also help towards the cost of equipment.
I am extremely pleased that this activity was accepted as suitable for a grant from the Wellbeing Fund as it is absolutely vital that we look at ways of keeping our elderly population engaged in activities that promote their physical and mental wellbeing. It is well documented that keeping active into old age is a good way to stave off mental health problems and if this helps them to engage in a sport that is suitable for all they will feel the benefits of this. Table Tennis is something that can be enjoyed at any age.
The work that OPAL do in my community is fantastic and keeps a number of our older residents active and enjoying their retirement to the full. It is somewhere they can meet up, take part in activities, go on outings and most of all have some company if they are on their own.
