PLAYING MUSIC OR OTHER NOISE COMING FROM DOMESTIC PROPERTIES

I often receive complaints about loud music being played which can be heard outwith the curtilage of a property and I am often asked what the levels should be. I took this up with the Anti-Social Behaviour Unit who have responded as follows:

“There is no set level or set volume which constitutes a noise nuisance, this is a subjective matter. What we do take into consideration is the loudness and impact of the noise, the duration of the disturbance, the time of day, what is considered normal for the area, what is the nature and frequency and the number of people affected. Sensitivity to noise is also important and it must be based on the average person. We all have different tolerance levels. We would also take into account any motive e.g. someone deliberately causing annoyance or distress.”
