I have received the message below from my former colleague on Leeds City Council and ex-Lord Mayor of Leeds, Keith Loudon. I am supporting Keith as my mother also suffers from this very cruel illness.
“I am walking 1 million steps to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK, and I would be so grateful for your support. My challenge takes place from 1st May and 5th December 2018 (so I am already ‘pounding the streets’!), and with every step I hope to bring a cure for Alzheimer’s disease closer.
This clause is close to my heart as I have first-hand experience of supporting a loved one suffering with Alzheimer’s Disease. It is a cruel condition that is becoming ever more common as we live longer, and it has a significant impact on the sufferer, and their carer(s), family and friends. I believe we must fight and see that future generations do not suffer from this situation. At present, there is no cure.
In the UK there are over 820,000 people living with dementia; in total some 25 million people – 42% of the UK population – are affected by dementia, either through friends or family. An estimated 163,000 new cases of dementia occur in England and Wales each year – one every 3.2 minutes, and one in three of the over 65’s will die with some form of dementia. With an aging population these figures are forecast to rise dramatically in the near future. Dementia occurs in every country of the world; it affects 1 in 20 people over the age of 65 and 1 in 5 over the age of 80.
Alzheimer’s Research UK funds research to prevent, diagnose, treat and find a cure for dementia. I would be absolutely delighted if you would like to sponsor my challenge.
You can donate via my JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/keith-loudon1.
Alternatively, if you prefer, you can donate via cheque, made payable to Alzheimer’s Research UK, and posted to my PA, Anna Crump, at the above address.
Please join me in the fight to conquer Alzheimer’s disease and find a cure once and for all.
With best wishes
Keith Loudon OBE
