LEEDS CITY STATION – IMPROVEMENTS

If you have visited Leeds Railway Station recently you will have noticed there is extensive refurbishment going on in the main concourse. You may be interested in the information below from the Combined Authority.

“As you have already been informed, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, in partnership with Leeds City Council and Network Rail, is transforming the area outside the main entrance of Leeds Rail Station – New Station Street – to create a more attractive space.

The New Station Street area is used by over 35,000 people catching trains, buses and taxis and walking to or from the city centre.

We would like to make a significant difference to the look and feel of this important ‘gateway’ to Leeds and the wider city region.  We want visitors to get a great first impression of our city as they come out of the station onto New Station Street.

Our plans to enhance the area to create an impressive gateway to the city centre include:

  • enlarging the forecourt area and widening the pavement for pedestrians;
  • realigning bus shelters to provide passengers with more space;
  • creating a new pedestrian crossing to make it easier for people wanting to cross New Station Street.

When complete, these measures will mean big improvements for people using the area who will find it more spacious, more inviting and easier to use the facilities for taxis, cycle access and the bus services when New Station Street re-opens.

So that the work can be carried out safely, buses will be unable to use New Station Street from Monday 28 January 2019 (midnight on Sunday 27January 2019) and will be diverted to call at alternative, nearby stops for the duration of the work.  The attached notice will be placed at all bus shelters located on New Station Street.

The following diversions, which have yet to be confirmed with the bus operators, will be put into place and will be clearly communicated to the public over the next few weeks.
