Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Series – Leeds 12 June 2016

“I am pleased to give you an update on preparations for Leeds hosting a round of the International Triathlon Union’s (ITU) World Triathlon Series next summer on Sunday 12th June 2016, and in particular to give you early notification of the areas of the city expected to feature on the route.

The ITU World Triathlon Series is the highest level of elite international triathlon, with the world’s finest athletes competing in venues around the globe as they bid to become world champion. The 2016 series will be made up of nine races, with each round broadcast live on television around the world. Every ITU World Triathlon Series event includes men’s and women’s elite races as well as mass-participation support events. Races are made up of three elements: a swim, cycle ride and run.

The British leg of the ITU World Triathlon Series had been held in London since 2009, but following a competitive process Leeds was chosen by the British Triathlon Federation and International Triathlon Union to host a round of the prestigious series in 2016. Following the success of last year’s Tour de France Grand Départ, the ITU World Triathlon Series offers another opportunity to host a major international sporting event in our city and showcase Leeds to a global audience. It will also be the final chance to see the world’s best triathletes compete in the UK before they head to Rio to take part in the Olympic Games.

Preparations are well underway to deliver another fantastic event for Leeds, and I am very pleased to be able to tell you the series organisers the International Triathlon Union visited the city recently and said they are happy with our progress and planning.

As with the spectacular success of the Grand Départ, we will be encouraging the city to come out in force and get behind this event to make for another unforgettable experience in Leeds. In the run-up to the races we anticipate there will be a number of community and school events taking place, and ask for your support please to encourage local communities and Leeds residents to get involved and support the ITU World Triathlon Series as they did so magnificently for the Tour de France.

As for the event weekend itself; it will begin on Saturday 11th June with a series of activities for all showcasing triathlon focused in and around Roundhay Park. The following day, Sunday 12 June, will see approximately 5,000 athletes taking part in various mass-participation events in the morning, followed by the elite and men’s and women’s races in the afternoon. Beginning with the swim in Roundhay Park, the cycle ride will take competitors into the city centre where the final run element will take place.

I am unable to share the full route details with you at this point as they are currently being finalised, however I can inform you that it is expected to take athletes through the following wards: Roundhay, Moortown, Weetwood, Headingley, Hyde Park and Woodhouse and City and Hunslet.

I am very aware of potential concerns from local residents and businesses in these areas regarding the route and can reassure you that officers are currently working on a communications plan to ensure local people and businesses are fully informed as to the route plans and event information.

We are also working with the emergency services, health and social care, community meals at home, GP surgeries and other agencies to ensure they are aware of the event and can plan in terms of providing care and support individuals may need.

We are hopeful of being able to release more information early in the new year, when I will be organising a briefing to discuss the event with you in greater detail.
